Polytunnel cover (round one)

The weather forecast wasn’t brilliant for Saturday but – with Bob Nelson on hand to lead us through – the Stromness Community Gardeners were hopeful we could tackle getting the plastic skin on the polytunnel.

Preparations were complete – trenches, drains, stone chips, posts, woodwork, metalwork, concrete, a few more stone chips. Eventually you just have to go for it.

Eight of us versus a fresh northwesterly wind.
To see how that tussle went, you can watch a two minute timelapse video.

So, er, we came off second best.

Folk were getting lifted off their feet while trying to hold the plastic in place. Retreat was the only realistic option.

The crew gathered their thoughts, ate the celebratory flapjacks anyway (thanks Rebecca) and vowed to have another go some (calmer) day soon.

This is one of the site tasks that is made easier the more people are on hand, so please do keep an eye/ear out for news of round two of this contest.

Thanks as ever to Bob Nelson who’s giving up his time to share his polytunnel expertise.
